Our Club

Club Facilities

Bunyan Airfield - on the Monaro Highway near Cooma - is one of the most unique gliding sites in Australia. Near the Snowy Mountains, and with every type of soaring available in the valley, Bunyan offers a challenging but rewarding gliding experience for Canberra and Southern NSW.

Club facilities include a club house with bunk beds, hangars for club and private gliders, and equipment for basic aircaft maintenance. Members often make a weekend adventure, with cooking facilities, and room for a campfire (when fire conditions allow!).

PZL Bielsko SZD-50 Puchacz

Our two training aircraft are the venerable 'Puchacz'. With forgiving handling characteristics, these gliders are excellent to learn on, and allow the students to really feel the effects of the controls.

Designed in Poland around 1979, the glider is predominantly glassfibre, with wood and fabric rudder and elevator. With an empty weight of just 370kg, with two pilots on board the glider can achieve a best glide ratio of 32:1.

Glaser-Dirks DG-303 ELAN

Our high-performance single seat glider - the DG303 - allows our solo pilots to perfect their soaring skills in a modern competitive glider. With excellent handling, and the characteristic 'DG long canopy', this glider is well suited to the strong thermals and wave flying experienced at Bunyan.

Designed in the 1980's by german manufacturer Glaser-Dirks, the DG300 series is well renowned as an agile club class aircraft. With an empty weight of just 238kg, and a 15m wingspan with winglets, this glider can achieve a maximum glide ratio of 42:1.

Piper PA-25-235 Pawnee VH-MLS

Our venerable tug - MLS - is a crop-duster design used as a glider tug. With all the power of the former, but none of the weight as the latter, MLS is ideal for the mountainous conditions around Bunyan.

With a finely turned propeller, MLS climbs like crazy, and is a joy for both tug pilots and the gliders hanging on behind. Arguably one of the best Pawnees for towing in Australia (at least we think so!), MLS is an integral part of Canberra Gliding Club operations at Bunyan.
